Web firms told by Chinese to control content
2011-08-25
The order by the Chinese capital's party secretary, Liu Qi, comes as Beijing cracks down on dissent and attempts to block the upward thrust of Middle East-style protests. It followed a visit by Liu this week to Sina Company , which operates a well-liked microblog service. A brief by the party paper Beijing Daily related Liu told Web corporations to "firmly forestall the growth of fake and damaging information." China's leaders inspire Web use for business and education but are unsure about its potential to spread dissent. That's particularly the case after social network websites played a major role in protests that brought down presidencies in Egypt and Tunisia.
