WordPress export and import tools

These tools are useful for moving sites hosted with wordpress.com and wordpress.org.

Export Tool

1. Go to your WordPress dashboard, i.e. domain.com/wp-admin
2. Scroll down until you see the menu item “Tools”
3. Expand the “Tools” menu and you will see an “Export” link
4. Click the Export link and you will see an option to select which users' posts you want to export
5. If you are not sure, choose to export all the users
6. This causes a prompt to download the backup file
7. Save the file where you can easily find it later

Import Tool

1. Go to your WordPress dashboard, i.e. domain.com/wp-admin
2. Scroll down until you see the menu item “Tools”
3. Expand the “Tools” menu and you will see an “Import” link
4. Click the Import link and you see a page where you select what type of file you want to import
5. Select WordPress as your import type
6. Now you may upload your backup file
7. If asked to select who will be assigned to the posts, you can create a new user or select a current user from the list
8. All done. Just visit your blog and refresh the page.
